Tharaphita is a blackened pagan metal band from Estonia. Created as a solo project of the vocalist/guitarist Ank in 1993, the band has become one of the most influential and unique bands in the Estonian metal scene. The name of the band comes from the Estonian fire god Tarapita. According to legend, Tarapita landed at Estonia’s biggest island Saaremaa. The ancestors had seen this fire in the sky and started to worship it. The first gig of Tharaphita took place in 1996. For now, there have been more than 100 gigs, also in other Baltic states, Finland and Norway, besides the homeland Estonia. The stage has been shared with the bands like Paradise Lost, Hypocrisy, Katatonia, Rotting Christ, Ensiferum, Arkona, Skyforger and Susperia.
The band has released their latest record “Ülestõus” last year and as soon as I had the chance to review it, I was blown away! We are not exactly talking about a usual “blackened pagan metal” band to begin with. From the first song, which carries the same name as the album, the deadly dance of black/thrash/pagan metal will catch attention. The riffs throughout the record are really catchy and deliver us that aggressive sound that will entertain the listener. Add the ‘raw’ vocals to the sound and there you have the essence of the band. The sound is also quite straightforward; there is no atmospheric vibe but just the aggression and that harsh, “straight-to-the-face” approach that will definitely make the lovers of that raw sound happy!
Generally, although the influences from some big names in pagan/thrash scene can be seen, “Ülestõus” can be considered as a great achievement in the band’s career. Influences are surely always there and I think this added another dimension to the sound. This is definitely recommended for lovers of pagan/black/thrash metal. My personal favorites are “Ülestõus” and “Tuhandeaastase orjaöö tuhast” but I gotta say that the whole record draws in the listener and especially if you love this genre, you won’t be able to pick out a favorite!
If you are craving for that aggressive and straight-to-your-face approach, give this record a listen! You won’t regret it!
